20 Enchanting Countries in Europe
If there’s one continent on every Singaporean traveller’s bucket list, it’s probably Europe. It not too far (around 12-15 hours flight time gets you to pretty much any country there) to make the journey unpleasant or tiring, yet it’s history, culture, climate and scenery is so far removed from what we normally experience in Singapore that you’ll truly feel like you’re on a holiday.
From the Romanesque architecture to the fine cultural offerings, there’s a lot in store. Though all the options can make it difficult to pick the right destination, we’ve got you covered. Here are 20 of the most enchanting countries in Europe:
1. Armenia
There are innumerable reasons to visit Armenia – the spectacular Mount Ararat, pristine Lake Sevan and a host of adventure sports. However, Armenia also has some of the purest and tastiest water in the world. If the cultural and adventurous offerings weren’t reason enough to visit, this might be the final push one needs!
2. Austria
You can never have too much time in Austria. Between the lush pastures, the rich wildlife, the divine Alps and what is arguably the most refined classical music scene in the world, the only problem you’re going to face in Austria is conjuring up the will to leave!
3. Azerbaijan
From Gobustan’s mud volcanoes to the Flame Towers in Baku, no country offers as perfect a blend of natural and man-made wonders as Azerbaijan. It also boasts unique experiences like carpet weaving, crude oil baths in Naftalan and being able to witness some spectacular craftsmanship in Sheki and Lahic. Need we say more?
4. Bulgaria
If you’re looking to visit an Eastern European country with a rich history, on a shoestring budget, look no further. Bulgaria offers some of the best value for money in Europe, even in bigger cities like Sofia. It is also a great destination all year round, thanks to its pristine beaches and skiing slopes!
5. Estonia
Divine white beaches, cultural diversity, and proximity to some of Europe’s most exciting cities. What more could we ask for? From a plethora of adventure sports to an enviable music scene, Estonia has much to offer.
6. Finland
Those with safety concerns can breathe easy in Finland. Regarded as one of the safest countries in the world, Finland also boasts some crazy events; including – but not limited to – world championships for mobile phone throwing and playing the air guitar!
7. France
Home to what is widely regarded as the most romantic city in the world, France offers a hearty sprinkling of breathtaking views, unique experiences and some of the finest art in the world. It’s no surprise then that France is one of the most popular European destinations.
8. Germany
Apart from its beauty and the warmth of the locals, Germany has an exciting roster of events lined up at all times. Oktoberfest celebrations, the Frankfurt Book Fair, the top-notch Berlin Film Festival and festivals that celebrate the works of Bach & Wagner are just a few of them!
9. Greece
Since time immemorial, Greece has been at the forefront of events and ideas that changed the world. Today, the country manages to be firmly entrenched in its roots, while also embracing the present. Home to ethereal islands like Santorini, Mykonos and Crete, Greece is a must-visit for anyone seeking a tranquil getaway.
10. Luxembourg
It’s time to start paying more attention to Luxembourg. From a nightlife that can bring out the partier in anyone, to some of the best walking and biking trails in the world & Bettembourg’s famous fairytale park for children, there’s a lot more to the country than meets the eye.
11. Malta
Whether you want to sit back and relax or party all night, Malta has something for everyone. Theatre, music, sports, adventure, beaches… The list of things this country has to offer could go on forever. To top it off, Malta offers a sense of serenity like no other.
12. Monaco
Monaco goes beyond just glitz, glamour and casinos. Those planning to visit have a lot more to look forward to, including Monte Carlo’s scenic harbours and a chance to witness one of the most enthralling motor races in the world – the Monaco Grand Prix!
13. The Netherlands
Float through beautiful canals in Amsterdam or revel in one of the many exemplary museums that adorn the country. Not only are The Netherlands home to some of the most important cultural artefacts in the world, but they also house kind and friendly locals, making every trip memorable.
14. Norway
In 2013, the United Nations’ World Happiness Report showed that Norway was the second happiest country in the world. And it’s immediately apparent why. From spotting polar bears to having a front seat to the Northern Lights, The Land of the Midnight Sun has a lot to offer.
15. Poland
A sense of royalty prevails in the air of Poland. Whether it’s because of the famous castles in Kraków and Warsaw, or because of the country’s rich musical heritage is up for debate. But one thing’s for sure, Poland deserves a spot on your “To Visit” list.
16. Spain
If sun, sand and scrumptious cuisine is what you seek, then Spain is the place to be. Peppered with immaculate beaches, the country is also home to a number of architectural marvels and natural wonders. Spain also buzzes with a spirit of celebration, and has an impressive artistic heritage to its credit.
17. Sweden
Sweden is known for its awe-inspiring landscapes, delicious seafood and some of the world’s best pop music. However, it also offers nonpareil views, such as the Northern Lights, and in winters, transforms into a wonderland straight out of a fairytale!
18. Switzerland
When most people think of Switzerland, they think of appetizing cheese and snow-capped mountains. But what most people don’t know is that Switzerland is also one of Europe’s cultural hubs. Take for instance, The Museum for Modern Art & Opera House in Zurich, or The Olympic Museum in Geneva.
19. Turkey
One of the most picturesque countries in the world, Turkey offers a variety of distinctive experiences. After all, you can snorkel over submerged Byzantine towns, visit a traditional bath house or feast on the delicious baklavas and kebabs.
20. United Kingdom
England comes to mind when most people think of the UK. However, the UK is actually made up of four distinct yet equally amazing countries that are a visitor’s delight. So whether you want to mountain bike in Northern Ireland or bask in the glory of a Welsh castle, the UK is the place to be.
