Key Things You Need to Know About Family Travel Insurance

Be Travel-Ready: 5 Tips for Safer Trips During the Covid Recovery

When it comes to travelling with your family, you want to make sure that everyone is covered in case of an emergency. That is where family travel insurance comes in.

Finally, when traveling with your family, you'll have a more organised journey than if you travelled alone. It's necessary to book accommodation ahead of time, there will be much more luggage than one dirty backpack, and you'll probably pre-purchase your tickets to attractions like the theme parks beforehand.

With all of this in mind, it is critical not to just accept the first travel insurance policy that the airline or travel agency suggests. It is always best to do your research ahead of time and find the policy that offers the most comprehensive coverage for your needs.

Family travel insurance is intended to cover families traveling together.

Family Plan provides cover for you and the dependent’s children (members of your family) who travel with you on your journey. Dependent children includes all age under 18 in your family (under the age of 23 if the person is a full-time student at a recognised institution of higher learning) with maximum 2 adults (defined in Policy Wording).

It may be a more convenient and cost-effective solution than purchasing individual coverage for each family member.

Here are the top things to consider when you are thinking of a travel insurance for your family.

Your children may not be covered for everything that you are covered for just because they are under the same insurance plan as you.

Look out for any age or that may exclude your kids from coverage.

Most family travel insurance plans will protect you for a variety of activities, but there are always a few that are excluded. These can include dangerous activities like bungee jumping or rock climbing, so make sure to read the fine print and coverage limits before assuming your entire family will be protected.

Also, before you allow your child to participate in any sports or activities, make sure he or she does not engage in anything that might jeopardise an insurance claim, such as disregarding safety standards.

Claims for medical issues resulting from a pre-existing health problem will be rejected by almost all travel insurance plans.

If your child has any sort of medical condition, be sure to check with the insurer ahead of time to see if coverage is available.

It might be difficult to locate a clinic in another country, especially if you don't speak the language. Many parents would prefer to wait till they return to Singapore to get treatment for their kid if he or she isn't experiencing anything that requires immediate care.

If you are visiting a foreign country, it is a good idea to check whether your travel insurance plan covers outpatient treatment without the need of first seeing a doctor in that country.

For Allianz Travel Insurance, our family travel insurance will generally cover you and your children for the following:

  • Trip cancellation coverage - if you have to cancel your trip before you depart
  • Trip interruption coverage - your travel plans are interrupted while you are on your trip
  • Trip delay coverage - your travel plans are delayed while you are on your trip
  • Baggage coverage - your baggage is lost, damaged, or stolen while on your trip
  • Baggage delay coverage - your baggage is delayed by an airline, cruise line, or other travel carrier while on your trip
  • Emergency medical coverage - You have to pay for emergency medical care while on your trip
  • Emergency transportation coverage - Transportation is needed following a medical emergency while on your trip. This includes emergency local emergency transportation and medical repatriation to Singapore if needed

Other coverage which depends on the travel insurance plan, would include:

  • Personal liability coverage - you are financially liable for damage you cause to a third party or their property while on your trip
  • Travel accident coverage - You suffer a death or disability as a result of a travel accident during your trip.
  • Cruise coverage - missed port of call, cabin confinement, denied boarding, etc.
  • Sports coverage - missed activity, equipment coverage, search and rescue coverage, etc.

In Allianz Travel Insurance, on top of these items, we also cover selected coverage for Covid-19, pandemics and epidemics before or during your trip (in line with the Policy Wording of your chosen policy).

For example:

  • If you or a travelling companion/family member are diagnosed with Covid-19 before your trip and need to cancel, you can make a claim for things like non-refundable travel and accommodation costs.
  • If you or a travelling companion/family member are diagnosed with Covid-19 during your trip, you can make a claim for things like medical care  and quarantine costs.

The Medical and Dental cover limit is up to $200,000 (Bronze Plan), $500,000 (Silver Plan) and S$1,000,000 (Platinum Plan). All plans provide Unlimited** emergency transportation coverage.

All in all, getting travel insurance is always a good idea because it provides you with financial and even health protection in case something goes wrong on your trip. Allianz Travel Insurance offers a variety of travel insurance plans to suit your needs so that you can have a worry-free vacation.
