Difference Between International Health Insurance and Travel Insurance

Be Travel-Ready: 5 Tips for Safer Trips During the Covid Recovery

Although international health insurance and travel insurance appear to provide the similar benefits, they serve two distinct functions.

For starters, international health insurance covers medical expenses incurred while living in another country for an extended or indefinite length of time,

Whereas travel insurance covers emergency medical care for people who are going on vacation or brief journeys.

An international health insurance policy should cover all of the following, as well as: local health care services, emergency coverage, maternity care, treatment for ongoing conditions, and repatriation if required.

An International health insurance policy for expatriates and those relocating abroad is much more comprehensive than standard holiday or business travel insurance. It's intended to cover both emergency and routine healthcare, giving expatriates freedom in terms of doctor and treatment facility selection as well as the option to receive care anywhere within their coverage zone.

International health insurance should include (each plan varies):

  • Cover for pre-existing conditions
  • Cover for chronic illnesses
  • Giving options and choices of medical providers
  • Cover for hospital stay
  • Cover for routine health check-ups

Allianz standard plans are modular, and you may build your own package based on your needs. In addition to the Core plan, options include:

  • Out-patient treatment
  • Maternity care
  • Dental care
  • Repatriation

You should double-check that your travel insurance covers emergency evacuation  which is not part of your medical coverage. If you break a leg while hiking in the woods, your policy should reimburse you for transportation arrangements  to the nearest  identified hospital.

Also, be sure you know whether your emergency evacuation  coverage will merely get you to the nearest acceptable facility or if it will also cover you for transportation back home.

For instance, if you injure your leg abroad, most insurance policies will pay for your hospital bills. However, they may not cover you for your transportation to get home especially if it is not a life-threatening injury requiring advanced care.

In a nutshell, double-check to see whether your policy will cover the cost of your return flight home if you need it

Third,  good travel insurance policies always include the following clauses:

·        Trip cancellation including when you are contracted Covid-19 before your trip

·        Trip interruption - Your travel plans are interrupted while you are on your trip, including when you’re contracted Covid-19.

·        Travel delay - Your travel plans are delayed while you are on your trip, including when you’re contracted Covid-19.

·        Baggage coverage - Your baggage is lost, damaged, or stolen while on your trip.

·        Baggage delay coverage - Your baggage is delayed by an airline, cruise line, or other travel carrier while on your trip.

·        And more: such as car rental damage, (Your rental car is damaged or stolen while on your trip) etc.

One of the most crucial aspects to consider in the age of the global pandemic is to get a travel insurance in Singapore with selected COVID-10 coverage*. Ideally, your policy should cover you for a variety of roadblocks that might arise throughout your journey and even before it begins.

Look out for:

  • COVID-19 coverage before your trip: trip cancellation if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 before departure.
  • COVID-19 coverage during your trip: medical coverage for COVID-19 during your trip, or if your trip is interrupted and you would need to return to Singapore. Or if you would need to be quarantine during your trip.
Most travel insurance plans cover medical emergencies, trip cancellation, trip interruption, delays, medical evacuation, and lost, damaged, or stolen luggage.

Travel insurance should offer protection of:

  • Loss of luggage
  • Loss of personal belongings
  • Cancellations
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Car rental damage (not usually included in a standard package)
If you travel frequently for lengthy periods of time and require routine medical care, you might want to look into international health insurance. When you have an international health coverage, you can prevent bill shock by varying healthcare costs across countries. Check dummy international healthcare insurance products here.

In the best-case scenario, having both insurance policies that are tailored to your unique requirements is beneficial. Before making a decision, consider what your policy covers you for, as some provide coverage for travel, relocation, or even healthcare.

Your decision on what type of insurance policy is ideal for you will be based largely on your personal situation, such as how healthy you are, the quality of the local health care system and hospitals, if you are settled in your country of residence or move frequently, and whether you travel frequently.

Hospitals in some nations, on the other hand, provide excellent care at a very low cost. However, for things that are not an emergency, such as surgery or therapy, it might take weeks to schedule an appointment.

Thus, one should consider these factors or questions before deciding:

  • Your current health situation
  • Benefit limits on your current health insurance
  • How will your current health insurance cover you when you move
  • The cost of healthcare in the country you are living in
  • Do you need international protection
